National Geographic Maps: These maps are a must have in our book. They are very detailed. They show elevation markers on every trail. We have found new lakes, streams, hiking trails and camping sites that are not shown on other maps. Each map is for a specific National Park, Forest or Area. They are printed on waterproof, tear resistant paper. A full UTM grid is printed on the map to aid with GPS navigation as well.
Compass: Strictly a personal preference on this one. We would strongly advise that you learn to use this instrument proficiently. It may very well save your life someday. Some of the desirable features are waterproof and shake proof.
Shave Well Hiking Mirror: Now your thinking who needs a mirror hiking!. Everyone does for emergencies and self hygiene. What if you get lost or fall off the side of the mountain. This will occasionally happen. Cell phones don’t usually work in the mountains. It is fog free, extremely light weight, and can be used to send signals. It is small enough to fit in your backpack. Think about this, your partner falls 60 feet down a hillside and he has the mirror, what do you do? You both should have one in your pack! They are backpacker approved by us.
