By far, this can be one of the most enjoyable ways of camping if properly prepared. There can be a lot said about backpacking 3 miles plus off the beaten path and setting up camp at a primitive site. Truly an experience not to be forgotten.
Started backpacking approximately 20 years ago with external frame packs from Wenzel. We carried an Eureka tent weighing in at 8.5 lbs. and sleeping bags at 6 lbs. each. The addition of the steel shovel and cookware soon made a pack weighing over 40 lbs.
Today’s technology with new gear, internal frame packs and titanium have proven to have positive results in lightening the load. It is not unusual to have a backpack today weighing less than 20 lbs. We at Camping360degrees hope to provide information, links and reviews of the gear we currently use as well as gear offered from many providers.
Backpacking here locally in the Appalachian Mountains, National and State Parks can be most enjoyable, again if, proper preparation is taken.
Some parks have specific rules regulations and fees for backcountry stay. We hope to provide links and accounting with reviews of these sites with information to make your camping experience a more enjoyable one. Enjoy!
