We ended up camping at this State Park when we wanted to attend Trail Days in Damascus Virginia. If you are wondering what Trail Days are well it’s a week long celebration for the folks walking the Appalachian Trail. The trail starts in Springer Mountain Georgia and goes all the way to Katahdin Maine. Our stay in Grayson Highlands State Park was over the weekend of May 15th and 16th of 2015.

The campground was very disappointing. The bathrooms were small, old and too few for the capacity of the campground in my opinion. Each site has electric and water hookups. There are also tent sites (no hookups). Dump station is available.

When making a reservation there are a limited number of reserve able guaranteed sites. Otherwise, if you make a regular reservation you get a site assigned to you when you get there. We took the last guaranteed site available. It is a good thing we did not bring our travel trailer. Cause it would not have fit in the campsite. The site was so small and un-level. The site next to us was so close it felt like the folks were in our site.

Check in time is 4:00 PM, check out time is 3:00 PM. Maximum capacity at site is six people. Pets are permitted but must be on a leash at all times no longer than 6 feet.

Also when we made the reservation they did not accept any discount cards including  passes. They also charged us a sur-charge because we were out of state! For one night it cost us $45.00.

The surrounding area in the State Park was very nice. They have the wild ponies there. The ponies were great to see up close. We did not get to see Fabian, The leader. In pictures he is black with a white mane. Wish we could have seen him.

The Appalachian Trail runs along the State Park which is a great place to meet up with friends and/or family who are hiking. There are a lot of trails to hike and backpack camp with some awesome views.
