Bear Tree Campground

20993 Beartree Gap Road

Damascus, Virginia 24236

On the way down the mountain from Grayson Highlands State Park we stopped to check out this campground. When we did a search on the internet for camping in Damascus Virginia this campground never showed up.

Bear Tree Campground is far better and a whole lot nicer. The campsites are very private and larger. Each site is enclosed in Rhododendrons so you really don’t see your neighbor. A lot of the sites have no hookups. There is plenty of water spigots thru out the campground. There are 8 group sites available. There are approximately 80 sites. 28 of those can be reserved. There are a lot more bathrooms available with hot showers and are clean.

The campground is in the shadow of Mt. Rogers, which is the highest peak in Virginia. Bear Tree Campground sits at approximately 3,000 feet. There is a 14 acre lake with a beach area for swimming. You can also fish this lake. There is a trail around the lake. We saw several folks kayaking and canoeing.

The Appalachian Trail is nearby also.

When speaking with the campground host it was learned that this campground hardly ever fills up. They do except discount passes where applicable. They don’t charge a sur-charge for out of state and the prices are a lot cheaper.

When we go back up there we will definitely stay there. You can drive the rest of the way up the mountain to Grayson State Park and see the ponies then come back to peace and quiet.
